About the city
ZAOSTROG
Zaostrog is a small coastal town located in the southern part of the Makarska Riviera, between Podaca and Drvenik, at the foot of Mount Biokovo. The town is known for its long pebble beach, clear sea and peaceful surroundings, combining the coastal setting with the mountain landscape. One of its most notable landmarks is the Franciscan Monastery of St Mary, dating back to the 15th century, with a library, museum and botanical garden within the complex. The old town has retained the character of a traditional Dalmatian settlement, while the coastline features seaside promenades, pine forests and numerous small coves. Local cuisine is based on fresh fish, seafood and other dishes typical of Dalmatian cuisine.
Zaostrog is an interesting destination for visitors looking for a more peaceful holiday while also wanting to explore the natural and cultural attractions of southern Dalmatia. Nearby destinations include Gradac, Drvenik, the Neretva Valley and Biokovo Nature Park, while its location along the Adriatic Highway provides good connections with the rest of the coast. Regular bus services connect Zaostrog with Split, Makarska, Dubrovnik, Ploče, Zagreb and other Croatian cities, making bus travel a practical way to reach the town throughout the year.
