About the city
OSIJEK
Osijek is the largest city in eastern Croatia and the economic, cultural and university centre of Slavonia. Located on the right bank of the Drava River, the city is known for its blend of rich history and modern urban life. One of its most significant landmarks is Tvrđa, the Baroque historic district, with its well-preserved squares, historic buildings and cultural institutions. Osijek is also known for its long promenade along the Drava, numerous parks and pedestrian bridge connecting the two banks of the river. Nearby is Kopački Rit Nature Park, one of the most important wetland areas in Europe, while traditional Slavonian cuisine features specialities such as fish stew, čobanac, kulen and other regional dishes.
Thanks to its well-developed transport infrastructure, Osijek is an important starting point for travel throughout eastern Croatia and towards neighbouring countries. Visitors can explore the wine routes of Baranja, the natural beauty of Kopački Rit or the cultural heritage of Slavonia. Regular bus services connect Osijek with Zagreb, Slavonski Brod, Vukovar, Rijeka, Split and other major Croatian cities. Good bus connections make Osijek easily accessible throughout the year, whether travelling for business, leisure or to visit family and friends.
