About the city
OPUZEN
Opuzen is a town located in the heart of the Neretva Valley, on the left bank of the Neretva River, not far from its mouth at the Adriatic Sea. It is known as the centre of the fertile Neretva region, where agriculture, particularly citrus growing, and river-based traditions have developed over centuries. The town is centred around King Tomislav Square and the Church of St Stephen the Protomartyr, while the Neretva River and surrounding canals give it a distinctive character. The area around Opuzen is rich in wetlands, agricultural fields and waterways that create a unique natural landscape in southern Croatia. Local specialities include Neretva-style fish stew, eel, frogs and fresh agricultural produce.
Thanks to its location between Split and Dubrovnik and its proximity to the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Opuzen is well connected with the rest of southern Croatia. Nearby destinations include Metković, Ploče, the mouth of the Neretva River and Baćina Lakes, making the town a convenient starting point for exploring the Neretva Valley. Regular bus services connect Opuzen with Split, Dubrovnik, Ploče, Makarska, Zagreb and other Croatian cities, making bus travel a practical way to travel throughout the year.
